10 best music festivals in Finland 2017
The most expected time of the year for every music fan is coming. Although, there are lots of good concerts during entire year in Finland, the festival season is something special and every music fan (no matter what genre of music prefer) can find appropriate festival. Here are my top 10 of music festivals hold in Finland this year:
Tuska Festival is one of the biggest metal festivals in Europe, taking place annually in Helsinki (this year 30th of June – 2nd of July). This year is special for Tuska Festival – it’s 20 anniversary. During the last 20 years Tuska audience had opportunity to seen such artist as Gorgoroth, Behemoth, Children of Bodom, Fields of the Nephilim, Slayer. What’s surprising for one of the headliner, HIM, it will be the first and (probably) the last performance on Tuska Festival. Other artists, that will appear on Tuska stages this year are: Mayhem, Apocalyptica, Electric Wizard, Dirkschneider, Devin Townsend Project, Suicidal Tendencies, Sonata Arctica, Amorphis, Lost Society and many, many more. So horns up to Tuska, because this year will be unforgettable!
Qstock Festival has been held annually at the end of July (this year 28th -29th of July) in Oulu, in the north part of Finland. Since beginnings of Qstock in 2003, on festival appeared international artists (among others The Prodigy, The Cardigans) and Finnish world-famous bands (Nightwish, Michael Monroe, HIM, Apocalyptica and so on), which play every type of music, from electronic to metal. Qstock Festival is well-known for its great organization and wonderful atmosphere and it’s seems to grow year-by-year. Artists, that will appear on Qstock stages in this season are Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, Michael Monroe, Haloo Helsinki!, Amaranthe, Apulanta, Stam1na, Imperial State Electric and many others.
Nummirock is 4-days (21st-24th June) festivals takes place by lake Nurmijärvi (close to Seinäjoki). Since the beginning of Nummirock, artists, that appeared there were: Behemoth, W.A.S.P., Mayhem, Testament, Arch Enemy. Doubtlessly, Nummirock is one of the best metal event in Finland. In this this year, Nummirock-attendees will be able to see such artists as Carach Angren (it will be their first gig in Finland after release of an album Dance and Laugh Amongst the Rotten), Dutch symphonic metal band Epica, Insomnium, Battle Beast, Swallow The Sun, Shade Empire and so on.
Provinssi is one of the biggest music festivals with international stars in Finland, has been held every year in Seinäjoki. First edition of Provinssi was organized in 1979 and since then, Provinssi-audience had opportunity to see such legends as Patti Smith, David Bowie, The Cult, The Cure, Iggy Pop. The popularity of the festival is confirmed by the number of visitors – in 2011 to festival had attended record audience with 81,000 visitors! This year Provinssi’s line-up is really impressive: Die Antwoord, The Killers, Danzig, In Flames, Airbourne, Sabaton, Amaranthe, Architects, Ellie Goulding and many other artists.
Sideways is 2-days ( 9th-10th June) festival hold in Teurastamo centre in Helsinki, well-known for the culinary and culture events. Apart from great, Finnish artists such as Death Hawks, Mikko Joensuu (who will play songs from his newest album Amen 3), Kaleidobolt, The Holy, Lake Jons, audience will see such international stars as Editors, DJ Shadows, Chelsea Wolfe, Röyksopp. That festivals is perfect both for electronic/pop fans and rockers.
John Smith Rock Festival
John Smith Rock Festival is new metal festival in Finland – the first edition was held last year. Festival takes place by Peurunka lake, close to Laukaa. On first edition appeared such well-known artist as Helloween, Amaranthe, Stratovarius. In this year, line-up is even better: D-A-D, Swallow The Sun, Children of Bodom, Wolfheart, Amorphis, Mokoma. Festival will be hold on 21st-22nd of July.
Flow Festival is both music and art festival and has been held annually since 2004 in Helsinki. On Flow Festival music fans will see both international and Finnish artists, who play almost every type of music (from pop music through indie rock, folk, soul, jazz to contemporary club music) . Last year, on festival appeared (among others) Iggy Pop, Sia, New Order, M83 and Chvrches. This year line-up is more pop but still marvellous: Lana Del Rey, Beth Ditto, The xx, Goldfrapp, Danny Brown, Max Jury, Black Lips and others. Flow Festival will be hold from 11th till 13th August.
Pori Jazz Festival
Pori Jazz Festival is festival for everybody who loves such music genres as: jazz, blues, soul, funk, hip hop, Afro-Cuban, world music and pop. Pori Jazz is one of the oldest and best known jazz festivals in Europe. Festival has been held since 1966 and had opportunity to host such music icons as: B.B. King, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, James Brown, Little Richard, Robert Plant. This year, festival will be hold between 8th and 16th July (main acts 13th -15th of July) in Pori and you can hear there Grace Jones, Chaka Khan, Jamiroquai, Herbie Hancock, Fantastic Negrito and many other artists.
Rock Fest is one of the biggest and newest metal festival in Finland. It will last 2 days (9th-10th of June) and takes place in Vantaa. On its first year, Rock Fest have two, extremely popular headliners: Rammstein and Evanescence. Other artists that will appear on first edition of Rock Fest are: Guano Apes, Michael Monroe, Pain, Santa Cruz, Royal Republic, Stam1na, Infected Mushroom and others.
This time on 2-days (28th-29th July) festival in Kuopio headliner will be one of thrash metal ‘big 4’, Megadeth. However, Rockcock isn’t only a metal festival – there will play artists from different types of music. Apart from Megadeth, artists, who will appear on Rockcock are: Dingo, Michael Monroe, Sonata Arctica, Apulanta, Kaija Koo, Battle Beast, Antti Tuisku, Sanni and so on.
